Explosion: The War of 1812
In June 1812, the U.S. declared war on Britain. One year into the war, the United States attacked York, the capital of Upper Canada. The British defenders of Fort York detonated their Grand Magazine - an armoury packed with nearly 30,000 pounds of gunpowder, 10,000 cannonballs and 30,000 cartridges. It was one of the biggest explosions ever witnessed in North America.
