On May 7, 2021 hackers launched a ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline. This was no small disruption. The 5,500 mile line transports 100 million gallons of gas daily and accounts for 45 percent of the East Coast's fuel supplies. Gas pipelines have long been a vulnerable target due to their value and exposed nature, yet while government agencies have doubled down on physical security, cybersecurity has been overlooked for decades.
