On the Pacific front, American Secret Services, after intercepting Japanese government messages, are convinced they will not accept unconditional surrender. The Secretary of the Navy, James R. Forrestal, says that, in his opinion, despite the circumstances in which they find themselves, the Japanese are determined to continue the war. In western Japan, the city of Hiroshima, in the Chugoku region, lies on a plain on the Ota River delta, which divides the city into six islands.
