Grand Admiral Karl Dnitz becomes the new head of state. In Germany, General Helmuth Weidling, commander of the Berlin Defense Area, surrenders the city and his troops to General Vasily Chuikov. In Czechoslovakia, the Czech resistance stages the Prague uprising.
